A Are you referring to LiquidWood? LiquidWood hardens by chemical reaction. Applying a very thin layer will slow the reaction. Multiple applications of product through holes (1/8 inch diameter) drilled down into the deteriorated wood are recommended for the best absorption and strengthening of the wood.

You could brush it onto the wood in several thinner applications. This should allow the product to cure without dripping and still allow for wood consolidation and hardening.

WoodEpox is the best product for wood restoration. Trapping moisture in wood can cause further rot, so it is best to dry wood completely (either naturally or with added heat) before using any repair products.

Love both the liquid and putty. This is a GREAT product and easy to work with. Once you learn how the materials behave, you can reconstruct complex profiles to repair damaged molding and other details; much cheaper than buying molder blades for small section repair!
